Are you ready to finish your handmade baby quilt. The challenge you now face is the quilt binding of a baby quilt?  As a quilter, designing and sewing are usually the fun and exciting parts of any quilt but getting ready for the finishing touch, the binding. This is where many quilters struggle.

Here are 5 tips to facing the binding challenge:

  1. Choosing fabrics for the handmade baby quilt can be the challenging task and most frustrating a quilter can face.  Determining the color choices make the quilt come alive or seem to bring a dull ending to a wonderful and exciting project.  The success of the baby quilt binding starts with choosing just the right color combination to match the quilt itself.
  2. If dreams would come true and you could have all the fabric you ever wanted. Your “stash” would contain every fabric you could ever need or want.  In reality, you don’t have all those fabrics, so look to colors used in the quilt or the backing. Pick up those colors for the binding.  Cut the binding on the cross grain and it will have a diagonal pattern to it.
  3. Once you choose the colors and design, the binding should be sewn with exactly 1/4” seams.  Be sure to miter the seams when joining the strips and press these open to avid bulk.  This technique provides a unique diagonal design.
  4. When purchasing fabric, one yard will yield about 576 inches of 2 ½ inch wide binding if you cut on the gross grain.  This method allows for more durability and stretch as you sew around curves.
  5. Once the baby quilt is complete and there is extra binding. A great way to store this for future projects is on old paper towel rolls.  Not only will you be recycling but these rolls store easily in a drawer or on a shelf.  Don’t throw away even short pieces because they can be sewn together to have a wonderful multi-colored handmade baby quilt binding someday.
