Forget meditation – quilting is my true form of relaxation. Quilting is my personal escape from the daily routines.
I live by the saying, “I cannot count my day complete ’til needle, thread, and fabric meet.” There’s something incredibly calming about the rhythm of quilting, especially when I sit down to work on my baby quilts at the end of a busy day. It’s a ritual that gives me the peace I need to unwind and reset.
The Importance of Mental Health
This quote speaks volumes to me about the power of creativity and mindfulness. It’s not just about stitching fabric together—it’s about taking a moment to center myself and focus on something I love. For over 42 years, I’ve spent my days doing what I enjoy most—teaching 5th graders. Though rewarding, it’s a job that can be mentally and physically exhausting. At the end of the school day, I often found myself reflecting on two key lessons I’ve learned.
Two Lessons Learned
First, I sometimes forget to wear the right shoes for a full day on my feet. And second, I need to get to bed earlier! Teaching 5th graders requires a lot of energy. To be effective, I need to stay ahead of them, not just keep up. Their curiosity and excitement are endless, and if I want to stay sharp and engaged, I have to prioritize my well-being.
Quilting as a Comforting Ritual

After a long, busy day, quilting offers me the perfect way to relax. As I work on my baby quilts, I let go of the stresses of the day. The act of sewing is my personal comfort, and it helps me feel grounded. By the time I’m done, I know my day is complete.
Taking time to quilt has become essential in my routine. It’s a way to take care of my mental health while creating something beautiful and lasting. The simple act of stitching fabric together brings me peace, and that’s why I make sure it’s part of every day.
