I learned to quilt from my Grandmother when I was a child, If you are a person who has made a quilt or just looking to start your very first project, learning from a wise quilter, like Grandma, who has been a quilter for many years, is the smart thing to do. Taking some tried and true quilting tips from Grandma will help to make your next or first quilt project not only more enjoyable but successful.

This first important tip involves working with your fabric. When pressing, keep the darker fabric on top.  If you discover that you’ve pressed a seam the wrong way, first press it back to its prepressed state, then press in the opposite direction. Whenever four or more seams come together at one point, press the seams open. This process will flatten the seams as you press your quilt block.  Grandma always said to dip one finger into water and dab the moisture onto the area where the multiple seams come together and push down to fan out.

The second tip in making a handmade baby quilt reminds you to keep your scissors sharp and continually check that they cut straight. Scissors that have been dropped may not cut a true line.  Keep two pair of scissors in your sewing area.  One is strictly used to cut fabric.  The use of fabric scissors to cut quilt fabric will dull them more than cutting your quilt fabric.  When transporting scissors it is a good idea to use their protective blade covers to that they don’t poke through fabric and other supplies.

To make your handmade baby quilt project successful, the third important tip  is related to your sewing machine. No matter the sewing machine you purchased with every new option available, don’t forget the inexpensive and tiny essential item, the sewing machine needle.  Dull needles become noisy and should be replaced immediately. When stitching a quilt block, needles are best when sharp, and it is best to replace the needle with each new handmade baby quilt top.
