Why Quilting is My Passion

Quilting is more than just a craft to me. Quilting is my passion. It’s a connection to my past, a way to engage with history, an expression of art, a teaching tool, a means of giving back, and even a business venture. Through every stitch, I see the many ways quilting has touched my life and the lives of those around me.

Quilting is a Family Legacy

My love for quilting began at a young ago. I spent hours standing beside my grandmother as she worked at her quilting frame. Each time, I watched in quiet admiration as her hands moved rhythmically, rocking the needle back and forth through layers of fabric. Grandma carefully stitching together pieces of cloth that would soon transform into beautiful patchwork quilts. Those moments by her side instilled in me not only a deep appreciation for the craft but also a sense of continuity. Moreover, knowing that the art of quilting was being passed down through generations in my family.

Quilting is a Reflection of History

Seminole quilt

Living in Collier County, Florida, I have come to appreciate quilting as an integral part of cultural history. The Seminole tribe, who have lived in this region for generations, have a long tradition of using intricate quilting techniques to create vibrant clothing and blankets. Their patchwork designs are more than just decorative. They tell stories, preserve traditions, and serve as a testament to their heritage. The thought of quilting as both a functional and historical art form fascinates me. Equally important,ilQit deepens my respect for its place in different cultures.

Quilting is Art and Mathematics Combined

As a teacher in Collier County, I have discovered that quilting is an excellent way to teach mathematical concepts. Patterns in quilts demonstrate symmetry, tessellations, angles, and proportions. As well as, each making them a perfect real-world example for students to explore geometry. By incorporating quilting into my lessons, I have seen students develop a greater appreciation for both math and art. In addition, each realizing how seamlessly the two can intertwine. Quilting is not just about sewing pieces of fabric together. It’s about balance, precision, and creativity coming together to form something beautiful.

Quilting is a Way to Give Back

Quilting also has a deep personal meaning for me when it comes to giving back. My daughter once faced a life-threatening heart condition, and during her time at All Children’s Hospital, she was given a quilt. It was more than just a blanket—it was a symbol of warmth, comfort, and hope. She still treasures that quilt to this day. Inspired by that experience, I now create quilts for other children who are facing medical challenges. I know firsthand how something as simple as a quilt can bring a sense of security and love during difficult times. Quilting is a Business and a Passion

What started as a passion has also grown into a business. I turned my love for quilting into an online store, Unique Baby Quilt Boutique (www.uniquebabyquiltboutique.com), where I create handmade baby quilts for families who appreciate the warmth and charm of a lovingly stitched quilt. Each quilt I make carries a little piece of my heart, just as my grandmother’s quilts did for me.
